A profound exploration of the Guhyagarbha Tantra using Jamgön Mipham Rinpoche's renowned guide book "Luminous Essence". The Guhyagarbha Tantra was brought to Tibet from India by Guru Padmasambhava and was then translated into Tibetan. It became the central scriptural source for the Nyingma Vajrayana tradition, providing the framework upon which countless sādhanas are based, especially of generation stage (Kyerim) practices.

Khenpo Tseten will explain the structure and meaning of the different elements of this tantra. By understanding the structure, we gain a much deeper appreciation of every other Vajrayana sādhana practice that we do. Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or a beginner, these teachings offer a unique opportunity to uncover the principles that lie at the heart of these practices, enriching both your comprehension as well as your meditation and realisation of the practice.

Ngöndro is the preliminary practice: both the foundation and at the same time so profound that it contains the entire path. Even great masters regularly return to the practice of the Ngöndro. To gain a clear understanding of the Vajrayana teachings, one is strongly advised to start with the Ngöndro practice as a powerful way of accumulating merit and wisdom.

Sessions focus on: cultivating selfless motivation, understanding the structure and meaning of the Ngöndro practice, engaging with foundational mantras, visualizations, and prayers, and experiencing the power of practicing in a community.

What is Chö?

The Tibetan word Chö translates directly as "cutting through". It is a Vajrayana practice that severs the root of our suffering: ego-clinging and dualistic grasping. Rather than avoiding our fears, inner demons and obstacles, Chö teaches us to meet them and transform them through compassion and generosity.

The Dudjom Tersar and Dudjom Lingpa

Our practice follows the Dudjom Tersar, the "New Treasures of Dudjom". In the Tibetan tradition a terma is a hidden teaching concealed by past masters, meant to be discovered at the moment when it is most needed.

These termas were revealed by Dudjom Lingpa (1835 - 1904), a highly revered Tibetan meditation master and tertön (treasure revealer). Because these teachings were discovered relatively recently, they are said to carry a "warm breath": the transmission is fresh and direct, and speaks to the world we live in now.

Practising together with instruments

Chö engages body, speech and mind. During our Sunday sessions we practise as a group, chanting the Tibetan liturgy while playing the ritual instruments.

• The Chö drum (damaru) and bell (drilbu): played together to carry the rhythm of the chant, symbolising the indivisible union of skilful means and wisdom.
• The kangling (thighbone trumpet): blown to call on all beings, spirits and personal obstacles, inviting them to a feast of compassion, and to remind us of the impermanence of the body.

Practising these elements together creates a strong, resonant atmosphere. The collective sound of the chanting and the instruments cuts through ordinary conceptual thinking and supports the meditation and the shared energy in the group.
